Aug. 24th, 2016 09:42 amName: Sir Benedict Michael Sorellin-Lancaster
Canon: The Cinder Spires series by Jim Butcher
Visible Age: 23
Gender: Male
Height: 6'3"
Occupation: Lieutenant in the Spirearch's Guard
Physique: Athletic but not super muscular
Complexion: Fair though he does tan easily
Hygiene: Excellent. He smells like expensive cologne.
Hair: "[...] tawny brown hair cut into a soft, thick brush". With prolonged exposure to sunlight, it bleaches easily to a sandy blond.
Physical Characteristics: Benedict is tall and broad-shouldered, strong without looking bulky. His eyes are a golden yellow-green, with vertical slit pupils like a cat. This is very typical for the warriorborn, but he is well aware of the fact that it's not the norm for anyone else. He also has pronounced canine teeth, which are non-retractable. He is described in the book as appearing "like all warriorborn, a particularly athletic-looking, masculine specimen of a man lined with hard, lean muscle. The effect [is] impressive".
Warriorborn? Yes! Here is the wiki about them. Cliff Notes: a random genetic mutation that makes the bearer stronger than normal, faster than normal, able to see in the dark, and have a touch of a sixth-sense for when danger is about to appear. Very hungry all the time. Sometimes purrs. The warriorborn are seen as a sort of second-class citizen, best suited to a career in military service or as a personal bodyguard, so even though Benedict is a son of a noble house, he has lived his whole life being pushed to the fringes of whatever social situation he is in.
Accent/Speech: Generically posh, with a vaguely British accent. Benedict is highly educated, so his vocabulary is large, but he's not necessarily prone to affected mannerisms.
Bearing/Demeanor: Well-mannered and polite, Benedict nonetheless holds himself with the easy confidence of someone who is assured of their place in life. He's been trained as a soldier, so he tends to hold himself straight-backed and at relaxed attention. He has had experience on airships which, paired with his natural warriorborn reflexes, leaves him always giving off the impression of someone whose feet are solidly planted no matter where he's standing.
Habits: He tends to walk slowly, steadily, and takes his time before coming to a decision. He is used to wearing a sword at his hip, which means he will often reach for the hilt as if to comfort himself with its presence. Being stronger than his human cousins, he has always been incredibly conscious of his own natural abilities and has sought to rein them in for so much of his life that it's become second nature. He has a very restrained air about him because of this fact.
Negative Habits: Benedict takes great pains to blend in with the humans around him, by doing things like carrying lumin crystals (a light source) everywhere he goes even though he doesn't need them except in the darkest of rooms. He also eats on a strict schedule when in public, and is very careful not to eat more than those around him, even though his physiology demands he eats twice as much and twice as often.
Skills: Aside from the general abilities of the warriorborn, Benedict is an excellent fighter. He is especially talented in swordsmanship, and wields a special, denser sword calibrated specifically for his enhanced strength which has proved to be quite devastating in combat. Benedict is also very diplomatic. He’s had to learn how to be, especially since his younger cousin Gwen, is anything but. For all that Benedict likes to steer clear of politics, preferring to remain an impartial observer as opposed to anything else, he’s capable of stepping in and acting as mediator if he has to. Despite his best efforts to the contrary, he’s been raised to lubricate relationships between House Lancaster and the other High Houses, which means he’s been trained in many of the refined arts one would expect of the aristocracy. He’s able to play a handful of different instruments, he can dance, he can sing, he can even draw with passing skill.
Relevant Personal History: Benedict is the first-born (and only, so far as we know) child of the Sorellin-Lancasters, an off-shoot of House Lancaster, which is the most politically influential family in his Spire (country). The Lancaster Vattery produces the crystals that do everything from acting as lamps, providing electricity, powering all sorts of weapons, and lifting the aeronautical ships of Spire Albion's vast armada. His uncle is also the Prime Minister, serving directly beneath the Spirearch (the king). Despite his relatively high social standing, Benedict spent years during his adolescence as a novitiate at the Temple of the Way (a vaguely Buddhist religion) before leaving for unspecified reasons, enlisting in the Spirearch's Guard soon after. It is tradition for at least one child in every generation of the High Houses to serve a largely symbolic year or two in the Guard, but Benedict has remained in the Guard for at least five years now despite having fulfilled his duty to his House. He has been given multiple specific missions by the Spirearch directly and has comported himself well enough that he has earned at least one medal for his actions, though he rarely, if ever, mentions this fact. He has also earned the name Tribesaver by the Cats of Spire Dependence (it's a long story).
Canon-point: Largely after the first book, The Aeronaut's Windlass, but also taking in some details of the follow-up novella, Warriorborn: A Cinder Spires Novella.
Backtagging: I tend to prefer quicker response times, but we're all adults here, I get it if life gets busy!
Mindreading: If it makes sense... He's not 100% human so it's hard to say what the inside of his head would be like.
Touching: While Benedict tends to hold himself apart from others, he secretly craves affection and attention, so he might be a little awkward at first but he'll absolutely melt at fingers running through his hair.
Shipping: Mostly m/f, but open to m/m too. It'll take a long time to work up to shipping, though, especially if it's cross-canon.
Fighting/Injury: Benny is a trained fighter and naturally skilled at it. (I am not naturally skilled at writing it, though.) He's stronger and faster than he looks, so he's definitely a formidable opponent, but he is capable of being beaten.
AU ideas: While Benny comes from a steampunk canon, I'm happy to AU him into many different worlds, including: MCU (as a mutant or mutant-adjacent), the Witcher, generic modern (fully human or not), DCU, Star Trek, etc. For modern AUs I tend to have him either actively serving in the military (British? American? unclear) or having just left his service. If you have any ideas of what you might like to do with him, PM me and let me know!
